Using AyrMesh for Public Wi-Fi Access
The Ayrstone AyrMesh system can be used for providing safe, reliable public Wi-Fi access for inns, campgrounds, lodges, marinas, and other facilities. Although most homeowners, farmers, and ranchers will not want to do this, AyrMesh users in the hospitality business will find this a very convenient and affordable way to provide internet access to their customers.
The Ayrstone AyrMesh system provides a very good way of delivering connectivity across a wide area, so, wherever you are in that area you can access any other device in the network on a secure, encrypted Wi-Fi network. This, however, presents two problems when you are providing public wi-fi:
- You may not want to encrypt the network so you don't have to give the encryption password to each person who wants to use it, and
- You may want to use "client isolation" to ensure that all of the people on the network are safe and secure from one another, and "bandwidth throttling" to ensure that everyone gets a "fair shot" at the available bandwidth.
Encryption is simple: if encryption is on, you have to enter a password on your device before you can get on the network. Client isolation is a little more tricky to understand: without client isolation, your computer can "see" and, possibly, access other devices on the network. For instance, if someone has file and printer sharing on, other people on the network could potentially see and manipulate his files and print to his printer. Similarly they could access any items on your personal LAN (network devices attached to your router).
Client isolation ensures that each client on the network can access only the public internet and his own computer. It shuts off all LAN access, both from the AyrMesh LAN and the LAN to which it is attached (your router).
Bandwidth Throttling ensures that each client on the network gets only a limited amount of bandwidth to the internet. When you turn on Client Isolation, Bandwidth Throttling is also enabled, limiting download speed (from the Internet to the client) to 1 million bits per second (Mbps) and upload speed (from the client to the internet) to 500 thousand bits per second (Kbps).
To utilize these features, go to the "Manage Network" page at ayrmesh.com. At the bottom, you'll see a link called "Advanced Network Settings."

Click on "Advanced Network Settings" to go to the Advanced Network Settings page.

You have two options here: turning off Encryption and turning on Client Isolation & Bandwidth Throttling:

In most cases for a public Wi-Fi system you would select both and press "Submit"
If you want to enable encryption and/or remove client isolation & bandwidth throttling, just click one or both of the boxes and press "Submit" again:
