Configuring your router for AyrMesh
The AyrMesh system creates a separate, secure network for your wireless devices, and most people will not need to change their router configuration. However, additional configuration of your router can be helpful to (1) turn off the wireless feature (so it does not interfere with your AyrMesh system) and (2) enable wired devices connected to your router to access devices on the AyrMesh network. Here are some directions to help you do that - we have also supplied specific instructions for a few popular brands of consumer routers: Linksys, NetGear, and D-Link.
Turning off the wireless feature on most wireless routers is very simple.
First, log in to the web interface for the router (usually found at a location like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1). The wireless configuration is usually found under either the "Wireless" or "Setup" areas. There is usually either a checkbox with a name like "Enable Wireless Network" or a "Mode" selector in which one of the choices is "Disable". Make the choice that disables the wireless network (at least in the 2.4 GHz band) and make sure you save the new configuration.
In some cases, customers want to have devices (like a desktop computer) tied in to their routers (usually via Ethernet) access devices on the AyrMesh (particularly IP cameras, but sometimes other devices). To do this, you must create a "Static Route" on your router to automatically send packets to the AyrMesh network.
This is not a very complex task, although we have had a lot of trouble with D-Link routers. In general, the steps are as follows:
- Log into the router's web interface (usually found at a location like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1)
- Use the DHCP table to find the AyrMesh Hub's IP address (and make that a "static" address if possible)
- Find the "Advanced" or "Advanced routing" features
- Select "Static route"
- Create a static route with the following characteristics:
- IP address: 101.0.0.0
- Netmask: 255.0.0.0
- Gateway: (the IP address of your AyrMesh Hub, usually something like 192.168.1.47)
- Metric (if needed): 2
Just save this configuration and you're done!
