Installing the AyrMesh Hub as a Remote Hub
An Ayrstone AyrMesh Remote Hub extends the range of the network, without a direct connection to the Internet. Since the data connection comes from the nearest AyrMesh Hub, connecting and installing the unit is simple.
The AyrMesh Remote Hub installs inside or outside, but must be installed in a position where its antenna is “visible” to the next nearest hub. For instance, if you only extend the range of a Gateway Hub, place the AyrMesh Remote Hub high on an outbuilding. If you want to extend coverage into a building, mount the AyrMesh Hub in a window with the antenna visible to the nearest hub. If you want to use a wired network device (a network device without Wi-Fi, such as a desktop computer or wired IP camera), install an AyrMesh Hub and connect the device to it. If you want to connect several wired network devices, connect an Ethernet switch to the AyrMesh Hub and plug several devices into the switch.
You need to determine where you will mount your AyrMesh Hub to provide the coverage you want and connect (establish a wireless link) with the nearest hub in the network. Sometimes this requires a bit of trial and error before determining the best placement for each AyrMesh Hub.
Step 1: Assemble the unit
- Screw the antenna onto the jack on top of the unit
- Slide the bottom cover off the unit
- Slide one end of the Ethernet cable into the receptacle on the bottom of the Remote Hub
- Slide the bottom cover back on the unit

Step 2: Associate the unit with your network
- Plug the power supply into the wall near your router
- Connect the Remote Hub to the power supply using the Ethernet cable plugged into the “POE” port on the power supply.

- Using an extra Ethernet cable, connect the power supply port labeled “LAN” to an open port on your router
- (Caution: Connect to the correct port on the power supply. It's very important!)
- Make sure the Remote Hub “checks in” to the AyrMesh portal - this can take 10 minutes or even more sometimes.

Step 3: Install the Remote Hub in its final location
- Unclip the mounting bracket from the Remote Hub
- If mounting the Remote Hub on a wall or post, use the screw holes in the mounting bracket to mount it with screws, then slide the Remote Hub back on the mounting bracket

- If mounting the Hub on a pole, use the provided zip-tie to mount the Remote Hub directly to the pole

- Plug the power supply in to the wall. The bottom green light on the Hub will come on. If there is anything connected to the "LAN" port of the Hub, the second green light will come on.

- After 5-10 minutes, the red light will come on the Hub, indicating it has "found" and "connected with" the nearest Hub. After another 5-10 minutes, more lights will come on to show the throughput between this Hub and the nearest Hub; the lights mean:
- Top Green - More than 3 Million bits per second (Mbps)
- Second Green - 2-3 Mbps
- Yellow - 1-2 Mbps
- Red - Unsure or less than 1 Mbps
- Check ayrmesh.com to make sure the unit regularly checks in to the AyrMesh Portal.

You are done! Your AyrMesh Remote Hub is now available for use.
Advanced Topics
Although the AyrMesh Network is a wireless network, you can put regular Ethernet devices (like a “wired” IP camera, for instance) on the network. You just need to have a Remote Hub (not connected to the router) and plug the device into the “LAN” port of the Remote Hub's Power Supply. If you want to connect more than one “wired” device to your AyrMesh Network, you can connect an Ethernet Switch to your Remote Hub – 4, 5, and 8-port Ethernet Switches are commonly available. Devices attached to the Remote Hub or switch, if they have a web interface, will show up on the AyrMesh Portal.
Finally, because the AyrMesh Hubs run on 9-18 volts DC, they can be used in vehicles or powered from batteries charged from solar or wind power. If you are interested in learning more about this, please contact us at
