Getting Started: Using the AyrMesh Portal
The AyrMesh Portal allows you to control your AyrMesh network and retrieve data from it - learn how here.
The AyrMesh Portal is the tool you use to control your AyrMesh network, and where you get information from your network. The AyrMesh portal has been designed to be extremely simple and easily used either from a computer or a small-screen device like a PDA or mobile phone.
You need to have an account on the AyrMesh Portal. To get an account, go to http://ayrmesh.com and click on the link that says, “No username? Sign up now – it's free!” Fill out the form, and you will be given an account. It is strongly suggested that you sign up for your AyrMesh Portal account from your home computer (one attached to the same router to which you are going to connect your AyrMesh Gateway Hub), because the AyrMesh Portal “remembers” where you are and can automatically sense the Gateway Hub when it is connected to that network.
You can see a short video that shows you around the AyrMesh Portal.
Once you have an AyrMesh account, you can log in and control your AyrMesh network. Alerts for your network will appear at the top of the “My Network” section on the opening page. The “Manage Network” link will take you to a management screen.
You can check the status of your hubs here by clicking on the “Check AyrMesh Hubs” link. You can see the status of your hubs, give your hubs names that are meaningful to you, and find the IP address for your Gateway Hub here (we'll explain why you want that later).
On the “Manage Network” page, you can also add a Hub (in case it fails for some reason to automatically come up on the Portal), delete a Hub (if you need to replace a Hub, for instance), or edit a Hub (to change the name).
At the bottom of the page, you can set the name, password, and channel for your network. You may choose to change the SSID – this is the name of your network and what you will see when you “scan” for Wi-Fi networks. You SHOULD CHANGE the WPA password as soon as possible – this is the key the Hubs use for encrypting data across your network, so anyone who knows this key can gain access to your network and all the computers and other devices on it. You can also change the Wi-Fi channel, but we do NOT recommend you change the channel unless you have to in order to avoid interference from other Wi-Fi networks nearby.
Going back to the Opening Page, you may see a section called “Devices.” The AyrMesh network will automatically detect any device on your network that has a Web Interface (such as an IP camera, storage device, or printer) and display its IP address here. You can then give those devices names on this page so you can keep track of them. If you don't have a “Devices” section on the Opening Page, it means the AyrMesh Hubs did not find any devices on your network with a web interface.
The final section of the Opening Page is called “My Account” - you can edit your account details (your email address, regular address, etc.) and log out in this section.
Advanced Options
On the Manage Network page, you'll see an option at the bottom called "Advanced Network Options" which allows you to set up your network as a public access point. DO NOT USE THESE OPTIONS unless you are setting up an access point for PUBLIC ACCESS.
The two options that are available here are:
- Turn Encryption OFF - this allows anyone to access your network without having to enter the WPA password
- Turn Client Isolation ON - This isolates all the "clients" (things attached to the wireless network) so they cannot interact with one another. Turning this on means that nothing attached to the AyrMesh network can interact with anything else on the AyrMesh network or your local network (attached to your router). If you have strangers using your network, this is desirable; if you are using your AyrMesh network to monitor IP cameras or control devices on your network, this will cut off your access to those devices.
See the article in the Support section called "Using AyrMesh for Public Wi-Fi Access" for more information.
One of the things that people want to do is attach additional computers or other items to the open ports on the router. The devices attached to your router will have access to devices on the AyrMesh Network; unfortunately, you will not be able to access computers and devices on the router from the AyrMesh network, because the router is a separate network from the AyrMesh network. You can get around this by setting what is called a “Static Route” in your router. You want to set the “target” to be 101.0.0.0, the “netmask” to 255.0.0.0, and the “gateway” to the IP address provided for your Gateway Hub in the “Check AyrMesh Hubs” page of the AyrMesh Portal. If it asks for a “Metric” set it to 2.
Devices on your router will not show up in the “Device” section of the AyrMesh Portal, but you will be able to find their address from the Router's DHCP table.
